Dr. Damian Echendu O. D.

Damian is a highly experienced optometrist with a range of academic and research experience who has maintained clinical practice throughout his career (spanning over 28years) working in both public and private practice.

Damian holds Doctor of Optometry degree from Abia State University and completed his Masters of Investigative Ophthalmology and Vision Science from the prestigious University of Manchester UK. In addition, Damian received a Bachelor of Laws degree from University of Abuja, Nigeria in 2006. Damian is a Fellow of American Academy of Optometry and also a Fellow of Nigerian Post-graduate College of Optometry in Ocular Health. He has also attended several clinical and non-clinical courses including those in ocular health, behavioral optometry and administrative management. He belongs to various professional bodies both locally and internationally and was a past President, Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA) where he left an indelible mark through his sound policies and programmes as the leader of the national body. He has occupied several other posts both in public, private service and professionally including member Public Health Committee and Children’s Vision Sub-committee of the World Council of Optometry (WCO).  With this level of membership, interaction and leadership, he has introduced breath of fresh air to eyecare profession and service in Nigeria and globally.

Damian is a recipient of several awards including the Father of Interns Award, Professional Awards for Service Delivery, Fellow of Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA), African Patriotic Personality of the Year award from the League of African Development Students (LEADS Africa) and so on.

His clinical interests are in new skills and technologies for the early detection and management of glaucoma and other ocular diseases as well as in behavioral optometry. Damian loves evidence based clinical practice and patient care. He enjoys travelling.
